Q: What is Beginner Band?
A: Children in grades 4 to 7 are shown how to use one of flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, or euphonium/baritone. No previous music experience is required. Grade 4s due to physical constraints may be required to use the smaller instruments. The basics of making music as a team are explored and at least two opportunities to perform are included.
Q: What size is the band and how many instructors?
A: Band should be 20 children with a maximum of 30. There are two instructors. One woodwind specialist and one brass specialist.
Q: How often does my child need to practice?
A: Short daily practice of 10 to 15 minutes will make the world of difference. The band instructors will provide what to practice. Providing a safe space to practice helps children remember to practice.
Q: Does my child need to read music?
A: No. We don’t have any prerequisites for reading music.
Q: Can my child take only one term of band?
A: No. Band is a full year commitment because it takes that long to get anywhere with any instrument.
Q: How do I register?
A: The online registration system is here: https://www.onlinebookingsystem.com/choralregistration/. Your school will be listed and the band offering displayed when registration is ready.
Q: What instruments can we choose from?
A: VEMS supports the following instruments. The larger ones (Sax, Trombone and Euphonium) are not recommended for grade 4s due to the size. The videos below help you understand what each instrument sounds like.

Q: Do we rent or buy the instrument?
A: We suggest renting for a beginner. VEMS works with a local supplier to help smooth out the process, but families may obtain instruments by whatever means works for them.
